What is Reiki?

Reiki Healing ... Rei means Universal, Ki means energy

Reiki,(ray-key) the ancient Japanese healing art, was rediscovered in the mid 1800's by Dr. Mikao Usui. He was challenged by his students at the University of Kyoto. They wanted to know why he could talk about but not demonstrate the healing phenomenons that Jesus performed.

He visited a Zen Buddhist Monastery where he found Sanskrit texts describing the healing formula, but they did not explain how to activate the energy. Next Dr. Usui went to Mt. Koriyama for a 3 week retreat of prayer, fasting and meditation. He selected 21 rocks to count each passing day. The last day of his quest he saw a bright light coming toward him. Initially he considered running from it. He decided to accept the light as an answer to his meditation, even if it meant his death.

The first Reiki attunement

A very strong feeling overcame him and he felt an energy pass through his body from his crown chakra. The light struck him between the eyes and knocked him unconscious. Next he saw colored light particles floating like bubbles in front of him. Soon Reiki symbols appeared. He also learned how to activate the healing energy in the phenomenal rediscovery of this ancient healing method. He called this healing energy and power Reiki.

He was so overwhelmed by this healing ability that he wished to share it with as many people as he could reach. and began his Reiki practice, in Tokyo. He died at the age of 62.

His system of healing was passed down through his students. It was brought to the west by Hawayo Takata, a Japanese American living in Hawaii. She was a young mother of two children, who was terminally ill. She travelled to Japan in search of an alternative form of healing to save here life, since western medicine could give her no hope. She went to Chujiro Hayashi's Clinic (a Master of Reiki trained by Usui) After her treatment at Hayashi's Clinic was successful, Takata became a student of Reiki.

She went back to Hawaii and practiced until Hayashi summoned her. When Hayashi knew a war was coming and that he would not be able to continue teaching Reiki, he conferred the Master level on Takata so that she could teach in the western world. Now there are thousands of Reiki practitioners throughout the world.
